Imaginal Disk
LP by Magdalena Bay
Imaginal Disk is Magdalena Bay's sophomore studio album. The duo made by Mica and Matt released the project during August 2024, after many teaser and the release of 4 singles from the start of the year.
Imaginal Disk brings to the pop scene the unique sound of the duo, with a storytelling narrative lyricism, centred on this 'Imaginal Disk' and on the search of the better version of themselves.
As in terms of style is similar to the debut, you got the story and you got Mica's raspy but angelic vocals, but in terms of sound you still got the nostalgic 2000s pop centered as a main genre, this time mixed with rock elements which it makes this album slightly alternative more than poppy. Most songs tend to have heavy drums, eletric guitars, and an oversaturated instrumental, that makes the songs more than full, rather like they're ready to explode.
The sound to me feels like a sort of a radioactive substance, something dangerous, that at first looks peacefull a nice but towards the end gets so heavy that you can't help but what more of that.
That's kinda the problem of the album in per se. I saw a video on Youtube talking about this and I totally agree, the songs are boring. The songs are nice but boring, they have nothing on them that distracts you and that keeps you focused on the sound until you reach the end of the song with the strong outro.
But I have to say that the listening experience was kinda good. The album is great, with the lyricism and the production but it's not something you can listen on repeat in my opinion, instead it's something that needs to be listened with some balance and every now and then to get that first time listening feeling that you won't get by listening the songs on repeat for an hour or two.
Basically:
Strong project. But I expected more from it.
